Plot/Intro:
Duat. Commonly thought of as the Egyptian Underworld, Duat has mainly been overlooked, the most famous rite performed there being the Weighing of the Heart. Apart from trained Egyptologists, many only know that the good souls pass onto Duat, and spend the rest of eternity happily. It’s just a story! The End.
But it is much more than that! Now, just think for a moment. Aren’t there many groups of gods belonging to different people, engineering different belief systems? At first, you would think that these beliefs differed because of where the people were living, and their own views of the world. Um… well, not quite. See, all of the gods actually exist, each set ruling, in general, a different set of people. The Egyptian Gods ruled the Egyptians, the Greek Gods ruled the Greeks… all of the legends are true. Bar the creation stories, of course. That was down to a God who was never worshipped.
Anyway, these sets of Gods live in the place known as Duat. Mount Olympus, Asgard, Valhalla, Mag Mell, Ta-Neter… all of those places that you regard as ‘heaven’ are places within Duat. And, of course, different Gods stay together in each of these places. If you were on a sightseeing tour, you would find Zeus obviously up in Mount Olympus, whereas Hathor would be over in Ta-Neter.
So, why am I telling you this? So much has changed over the centuries… now, the Gods spend much of their time on Earth, pretending to be human whilst making sure that they have at least some followers. From staying in Duat, watching and guiding their peoples from afar, the gods now have been forced to succumb to the trends of modern society. All of them stay between Duat and one city: San Francisco, where their own divine eccentricities are part of the normal backdrop. The Council of the Gods rules from there, hiding behind a multifaceted ‘corporation,’ of which the Ruler of the Gods plays President. Not all the gods work there, but live ordinary human lives whilst on the planet’s surface, making sure that none of their peers are hiding things from them.
Of course, life goes on. Ordinary people are going around their ordinary, stressful, everyday lives in San Francisco with no clue as to what is happening under their noses. Some psychics may have an idea, naturally… oh, and did I mention that there are also bound to be illegitimate offspring of the gods down on Earth too?
Okay, so basically, the gods are staying in San Francisco, making sure that people think of them from time to time, as well as existing through all kinds of Court intrigues, whilst humans get on, maybe even giving birth to demi-gods. They’ve been like this forever, why the big change now?
You’ll probably know that Ra, the King of the Gods, gave his throne up quite a while ago to Osiris and Isis, the couple that managed to just about keep some kind of balance in Duat. Now, though, they look to retire as well, leaving Anubis in charge. However, despite the fact that, strangely enough, Set hasn’t contested his right to rule, this has become a dark time for the gods. The other gods are tired of the Egyptian gods ruling over them, and a war may be imminent. Then again, no one can agree on who should rule instead, so there are some that believe Anubis should be given a chance. After all, it is rumoured that Ra will one day return to his seat above all others, being the second most powerful God in creation.
At the same time, Chaos, the original God, is starting to want to meddle in affairs of the Universe, which could, in theory, cause its end, making all of the other squabbles seem petty and ludicrous. It’s a shame that the Egyptians haven’t bothered to share that fact with the others yet.
Duat is an entirely new, homemade roleplay, where you are a God. Who needs the rules against God-Moding when you are one? Only Chaos can kill a God, everything else is an annoyance. Then again, they still undergo all of the trials and intrigues of any other Court, yet the consequences are much more deadly. The world below is also going into disrepair, as far as peace and the rest goes… so what are you going to do about it? Watch Earth destroy itself, or gather others to aid the poor planet? Are you well known God, like Hathor, Poseidon or Morrigan… or a smaller God, such as Khnum, Aristaeus or Veteris? It’s all up to you! As long as you find out the basics about the Gods, then create them in your own way. Was Aphrodite a gentle and beautiful woman, to be adored by all? Or was she a hard nosed pregnant dog jealous of everyone that could even possibly match her beauty? You can be human, too, trying to get on with life, or even a daughter of a god without realising it… you didn’t kill the cat with a thunderbolt when you were younger, did you? Legends and myths are twisted versions of our Duat, so be what you want to be… come visit the legend of a lifetime!
