Plot/Intro:
2006, May 11th entry:
We lived among them since the time of the cave man, when that Neanderthal first climbed down from their jungle trees and stood up and walked upright. Now, of course, the other creatures have their own legends of their own births, some say they were created by the gods, and others derive their origins from Judeo-Christian roots. Nevertheless, we’re here and we’re real. Creatures that were thought to only have been conceived from the minds of madmen – beings who could transform into animal shapes, beautiful creatures that drank the blood of humans – were actually real, were actually breathing, living beings that had been living in secret since the dawn of man.
Now, some people want to believe that we Breeds just suddenly popped up recently—recently, as in the late 19th century. The humans want to lie to themselves and deny the fact that mankind is not on the top of the food chain anymore, and actually never was. They want to tell themselves that the year was 1889, and the place was a small town poised on the edge of a Louisiana bayou, called Damnation Alley.
They say that Damnation, despite its name, had been a peaceful place, had been a place where people could go to raise their families with the good ol’fashioned American values, a small town where everybody knew everybody and somebody’s private business was sure to be everybody’s business by noon the next day.
They want to say that that faithful day in 1889 was a scorcher, unheard of in those bayous when Damnation was captured in the thralls of a newly arrived autumn; the animals were hunting and scavenging and gathering, preparing for the long winter ahead.
But whereas Nature was at peace, the people of Damnation were in an uproar, for among them has been discovered a witch.
A witch…
Not some half-pint nature-lover, no. A true witch.
A creature once thought of as myth and legend only, a creature whose frightening stories had been used to put the most unruly of children to bed, was discovered walking among the sons and daughters of mankind, invisible.
Jonas Baptiste, a respected doctor and husband, was discovered by his neighbors, pinned to the walls of his family home, a look of terror frozen on his face and fear still written in his dead eyes, as his wife, Miriam Baptiste, held in her hand a blue flame that blazed, but neither harmed her nor burned her, her deep brown eyes glowing with a white light that shone like a thousand suns.
They never say how, Miriam Baptiste had been apprehended, but they do say that when she had been hanged, the town Reverend beating on his Bible and shouting, “Thou shalt not suffer a Witch to live!”, the town had been filled with such a fervor, and sought out proof that other such creatures such as she lived and walked amongst them. Old legends and stories were re-examined, old myths were explored, all in the hopes of finding these creatures.
The year is now 2006, and the townspeople got their wish.
The old myths are real. The old creatures do exist, and they are more plentiful then anyone ever thought.
There are werewolves and werecats, animals that were worshipped by the ancients. There are vampires and their offspring, the Dhampyr, hated by the world of light and dark. And there are the Witches, the men and women who walk in magick.
It is harrowing existence we live, day-to-day, trying to survive and keep our natures hidden from the humans, but this is becoming a losing battle. They are discovering more and more of us as time rolls on, as the Breeds grow weary of their human hunters. We want to exist without the fear of death or burnings, without the fear of being experimented on and hated.
We long to walk among them. We long to walk among men without fear.
--Octavius Valderamo, Witch
